A remarkable Auvergne village that nestles at the bottom of a trough shaped valley; Dienne has 295 inhabitants, and is at the heart of the magnificent Santoire valley. You will appreciate its Roman church that dates back to the 12th century which has been altered with the passing years but still dominates some very old rural houses with carved lintels.

  Le lac de Sauvages. Situated at nearly 1200 m altitude, this 20 hectare lake with adjoining wetland is set within an exceptional natural environment. This is a great place to relax, to go boating and trout fishing. A great day out for those with a taste for the wild, not to be missed!

Au lac de Sauvages
It is possible to hire fly fishing equipment, or rods for those with no fishing licence (no kill) from June to September.
Dans la Santoire 
This meandering river with its calm stretches is an ideal place to go fly fishing, especially on Dienne’s plateau. It is possible to fish live bait, feral trout, Minnows and Gudgeon. For those who want a bit more excitement, downstream there are a series of waterfalls that make for more physical fishing.
Waterfall and watermill
When leaving Dienne in the direction of Lavigerie, turn into a small lane that will take you to Drils, discover its old houses that have been beautifully restored. Leave the car by the village fountain.
At the end of the village, take a look at the 17th century watermill that has recently been restored. The mechanism inside is made out of wood and it is a real gem There is a small waterfall behind the watermill

Some walking ideas

Entremont and Limon
This walk takes 6 and ¾ hours, 24 Km and a 550 m gradient
Le sentier des Quiroux
This route follows an alignment of basalt cairns which act as a guide to cross the Limon plateau from the south to the north.
You can also do this route on horseback or with your mountain bike.
Col de Serre-Puy de Niermont
This walk takes 7 hours, 20 km,
450 m gradient
Limon and rocher de Laqueuille, a 4 hour walk, 11km, 450 m gradient
This is an impressive rock face with a cross on the top. It overlooks the village of Dienne. Legend has it that the Gallo Romans built a temple dedicated to Diane; the Goddess of hunting, at the top of the rock and hence the name Santuarium Dianae, Santoire. The temple was later destroyed by Charlemagne, and then was replaced by a castle around 800 AD. There are still some building relics that prove that the edifice existed. You can walk to the top leaving from Dienne. There are fantastic views.

Mountain biking ideas

Entremont and Limon 
This is a 2 hour ride with a 290 gradient. A fairly strenuous route with a couple of quite steep hills (gradient of 290m)
La vallée de la Santoire
This ride takes 12 hours, 28 km with a gradient of 760 m. It should be done in different stages, over two days.

Air sports

Paragliding: Initiation in tandem (open to everyone), half day initiation, 3 to 5 day courses
Learn to pilot a cage; discover the sensations of gliding and what you can do with this aircraft.

- Powered hang glider:  In tandem, open to everyone
- Paramotor: This course is reserved for experienced paragliders (from 15 years old)

Other interesting features

The church 
It has three aisles and it has lovely examples of 12th century Roman art in the Haute Auvergne with numerous sculptures.

La maison de maître de la Cheyrelle 
This was originally a farmhouse manor but was transformed into a holiday house at the beginning of the 20th century. It is a private residence but it is possible to visit in July and August.
Opening periods for 2007:
From July 11th to September 30th, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays (from 3 pm) and the first four Sundays in September.
Prices: 4€ per person, free for the under 14 year olds.

Chapelle Saint-Roch, Fortuniès
This 12th century chapel was extended in the 19th century .It is situated on the top of a rocky hill, next to the plateau of Chalinargues. There are fantastic views over the Limon plateau and the Santoire valley
